How Much Does a New Deck Cost in Guelph?
From Budget-Friendly to Luxury Decks
One of the most important questions a homeowner can ask is how much will my new deck cost? Of course, the cost will vary considerably depending on what type of deck it is, its size, and what finishes might be desired. K&M is happy to work on projects of any scale whatever the budget, making sure the homeowner understands the costs.
What about the wood?
-
Pressure-Treated Wood
The most common finish for a deck in Ontario, pressure-treated wood is also the most affordable.
-
Cedar
Cedar is an upgrade from pressure-treated wood and it is beautiful! People are drawn to cedar for it's natural weathering and eco-friendliness but it does come at a cost.
-
Composite
A step above cedar in cost, composite is almost entirely weather proof! It is an excellent option for those seeking a low maintenance option but it does start to drive the cost up.
-
Ipe and Exotic Hardwoods
The more luxurious option on the market for decking are import varieties of hardwoods. There are many options available with each their own characteristics. These are by far the most expensive options.

Railings
-
Wood & Baluster
By far the most popular option! Black balusters set in pressure-treated wood rails are affordable and attractive.
-
Aluminum
Aluminum railings with either tempered glass inserts or matching balusters are the next option up. They can really tie a deck together while remaining cost effective - particularly for retrofit.
-
Custom Privacy Screens
Custom privacy screens are truly the best way to make a deck yours. They can double as guard rails and really help enclose your deck. They are an excellent way to add value to your outdoor living space.
-
Custom Options
If you're looking for something a little different - just let us know. We are always more than happy to come up with a new design or proposal custom to your project.
How Much Does Deck Installation Actually Cost?
The final cost of a new deck can vary considerably depending on the desired end result. A ground level floating deck without railings versus a second level deck with composite decking have very different costs. From the lower end of the spectrum to the higher end, we have built decks that cost anywhere from $25 per square-foot all the way up to $90 per square-foot.
No matter the budget, we are happy to work with you to design and build a deck that works for you!
Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to build a deck in Guelph?
Usually, if your deck will be less than 2' off the ground, you will not need a permit. There are a few other factors to consider, so feel free to reach out. We're happy to help navigate the permit process.

How much does a new deck cost in Guelph?
A new deck can cost anywhere between $25 and $90 per square-foot. Finishes, height, railings, and stairs can all make a significant difference. Feel free to reach out for a free estimate.

When should we stain a deck after it's built?
Since pressure-treated wood comes out of the plant with some trapped moisture, you do want it to dry out before applying stain. The general rule of thumb is one season, but some PT brands claim you can stain as soon as the wood is dry to the touch. It's always good to ask!

Do I need railings on my deck?
Railings are required on a deck that is greater than 2' off the ground, or if the adjacent ground slopes too steeply, and for staircases with more than three steps. We make sure your designs are 100% code compliant.

Can we re-use the deck framing?
Refurbishing a deck is a great option when budget is a constraint. Many times the frame of a deck will be in near original condition despite the condition of the deck-boards. We are more than happy to assess free of charge!

What kind of stain should we use on our deck?
We recommend transparent penetrating oil. There are a lot of great options but picking the right one is important. You don't want paint chips flaking off after a year! We can help guide your selection.
