What makes a good fence?
At Kerr & Miller Construction, we take pride in building strong, reliable fences that stand the test of time. Our attention to detail and commitment to quality ensures that every fence we build is both functional and beautiful. Whether it's a simple boundary or a custom design, we deliver craftsmanship you can count on. Here are some of the things we do differently:
Posts
Perhaps the most important thing about of a good fence are the posts. They anchor the fence to the earth, and have the greatest impact on it's longevity. When a fence eventually fails you can be sure it is because the posts are no good. So, when it comes to selecting and setting posts there are a few things to get right!
Depth:
As a rule of thumb, posts in our part of Ontario are typically set to a depth of 3' below ground. We like to go a step further and set all of our posts at a minimum of 3.5' (or 42"). This makes our fence more resistant to strong winds and frost-heaving.
Fill:
Once the post is set in its hole, it needs to be filled in. It's important to keep the post plumb throughout in-filling and to make sure it is filled in securely. That's why we use concrete to stabilize the post first.
Material:
Fences are always exposed to the weather so, using high quality material is always important. When wood is being used, it is important that it is rot resistant and can withstand contact with concrete so we use either pressure-treated wood or cedar for all of our wood fence posts.

Construction
Although the building code does not apply to fences, there is an ASTM standard that outlines the best practices for their assembly. We make sure that all of our fences meet or exceed that standard for framing to make sure your fence is as sturdy as can be. Each municipality in the area also has its own fence zoning by-laws. We make sure that we are well-versed so your fence is 100% legal!

What makes a well-framed fence?
-
We add more cross-members for taller fences - making a stronger fence.
-
We use purpose-made brackets or structural screws.
-
We can add sacrificial rot-boards at the top or bottom to preserve your fence.

How will zoning by-laws affect my fence?
-
The overall height of your fence with or without lattice.
-
Where your fence can be in relation to the property line and roads/sidewalks.
-
Required fencing for pools and hot-tubs.
-
Required gates for accessibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to build a fence in Guelph?
Usually the answer is no, but if you are building a fence around a property with a pool or hot-tub you will need a permit. K&M takes care of this for you so you don't need to worry.

How tall can a fence be in Guelph?
The maximum height of your fence depends on where it is on your property. The overall maximum is 8-feet, but there are places where only 2-1/2-feet are allowed. We'll help you make the most of your fence - just ask!

Will there be gaps in my fence?
Depending on the type of fence, you might not be able to see through at all. Still, even for fences with staggered boards we take great care to preserve your privacy and specially cut boards to fill in any gaps. Ask us about design options!

What is the cost of fence installation in Guelph?
The cost of fence installation in Guelph depends on material, height, and property size. K&M offers competitive pricing and free estimates to help you understand the costs of your project.

What kinds of fences does K&M install?
At K&M we specialize in custom wood fences in both pressure-treated or cedar, and aluminum privacy screens. We also install chain-link, and steel/aluminum decorative fences.

What will happen with the dirt from digging post holes?
Since removing dirt is not economical, many fence builders will leave the dirt directly around the post. At K&M, we like to take it one step further by raking the dirt out along the fence line to make it as flat as possible before spreading grass seed on top.
